What's New in CrystalMaker 4.0?
Smoothed Graphics
CrystalMaker
4.0 now features smooth-shaded lines, bonds and polyhedra. Screen
graphics have greater finesse and show much more detail than before.
The new smoothed graphics replace the former "High Resolution"screen graphics mode: the new graphics provide a similar onscreen
quality, with only one quarter the memory requirement. Furthermore,
smoothed graphics can now be printed or recorded in pixel map
PICT files.
- Wireframe plots use smoothed graphics by default. Note
that lines are now plotted according to custom bond styles, e.g.,
banded bond cylinders are represented by striped lines.
- Ball-and-stick and stick
plots show smoothed
bond cylinders at all resolutions. If you have the "Fast
Rotation" setting, these bonds will be approximated by unsmoothed
lines during screen rotation. After rotation has been completed,
structures are automatically replotted in the full glory.
- Polyhedra have smooth edges, picked out in the
highlight colours, as defined by the Rendering/Reflectance Options
dialog.
- Unit Cell Edges are now drawn using smooth lines.
Important Notes:-
- Your monitor
must be set to display thousands (16-bit colour) or millions
(32-bit colour) of colours for smoothed graphics to operate.
- CrystalMaker
is optimized for use in 16- or 32-bit colour. We strongly
recommend using 16-bit/"thousands" (faster) or 32-bit/"millions" (highest quality; slower plotting) compared to 8-bit/"256
colours" graphics. To change your monitor's colour depth,
go to the Monitors control panel (System 7) or the "Monitors
and Sound" control panel (MacOS8) and choose a new colour
depth; you may need to change the screen resolution (numbers
of pixels) in order to get more colours.
- Smoothed graphics are slower
to plot than unsmoothed graphics. We therefore recommend that
unless you have a very fast computer, you leave the Rendering
> Fast Rotation Mode option selected. If you are making QuickTime
movies and wish to record smooth bonds during on-screen manipulation
and rotation, you should select the Rendering > Full Rendering
Mode menu command.
